Chimney Neglect Puts Your Home at Risk

Over time, chimneys – or flues – naturally accumulate soot, ash, creosote and debris produced by the byproducts of combustion, like the dark, tarry substance known as creosote.

Without regular cleaning, this build-up can restrict airflow, reduce efficiency, and create serious safety risks – even a chimney fire.

The risks are real – about 6,000 chimney fires are reported every year across the UK, with many spreading into the roof timbers before they are even noticed.

Nesting birds and pest infestations are also a problem when it comes to blocking chimneys, and of course the general accumulation of debris that gets into the flue over time. Anything that blocks the chimney restricts the draw of the fire you light below, and pushes combustion gases into your living space. The worst case is a build-up of toxic, odourless, colourless carbon monoxide inside your home.

Regular chimney sweeping restores the flue draught and the trained sweep also gets a chance to inspect the soundness of your chimney – checking for structural cracks, deterioration or anything else that can negatively affect safety and efficiency.

Just as crucial is the fact that most home insurance policies require that chimneys and flues are swept regularly, otherwise a claim may be refused in the event of a fire.

When to Have Your Chimney Cleaned

The frequency with which your chimney needs sweeping depends on the type of appliance you use and the fuel you burn.

As a general rule, the best time to have your chimney swept is in late summer or early autumn — before the heating season begins. This gives you the best chance of catching any problems, including bird nests from the spring, before you start using your fire.

A second sweep mid-season is advisable if you use your appliance heavily or burn wood.

We’d also recommend that you schedule a chimney clean when you’ve moved into a property with a stove and are not sure when the flue was last swept.

There are signs to watch for like the fire being difficult to light, burning sluggishly, producing excessive smoke, and smoke back-drafting into the room that mean a chimney sweep visit would be a good idea.

Guidelines and Recommendations

Here are some guidelines based on the recommendations of HETAS, the official body for solid fuel heating in the UK, and the National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS).

Appliance / fuel type Recommended frequency
Wood (seasoned), used regularly At least twice per year; quarterly if used as a primary heat source
Smokeless solid fuel At least once per year
Bituminous (house) coal Twice per year
Oil-fired appliances Once per year
Gas fires / gas appliances Once per year
Pellet stoves Once per year minimum; more often with heavy use

The Chimney Sweeping Process

A professional chimney sweep is far more thorough — and far less disruptive — than many homeowners expect. Here is what to expect when our sweeps visit your property.

Preparation and protection

Before any work begins, we lay dust sheets in front of the fireplace and take steps to protect your flooring and furniture. Our equipment is designed to contain soot and debris, ensuring the area is left clean and tidy when we finish.

Inspection of the fireplace and appliance

We examine the firebox, throat, damper or register plate, and the base of the flue. This initial inspection helps us identify any obvious structural issues, blockages or areas of concern before sweeping begins.

Sweeping the flue

Using traditional chimney brushes combined with modern specialist rods and high-powered vacuum equipment, we work through the full height of the flue — from the firebox to the chimney pot. Our vacuum system captures the dislodged soot and debris as we work, preventing it from escaping into your room. Depending on the height and condition of the chimney, this may be done from below (through the fireplace) or, where necessary, from above (via the roof).

CCTV flue inspection (where required)

For a more detailed assessment of the flue's condition — particularly in older properties or where we have concerns about the liner — we can carry out a CCTV inspection of the flue. This allows us to check for cracks, spalling, failed joints or other structural issues that are impossible to detect from the outside.

Smoke test and safety check

Once the flue has been swept, we carry out a smoke test to confirm that combustion gases are venting correctly and that there are no leaks into the living space. We check for adequate draw and verify that the appliance and flue are operating safely and efficiently.

Safety certificate and advice

At the end of every sweep we issue a signed safety certificate — the document you will need for your home insurance records. We will also advise you on the condition of your chimney, the ideal next sweep date, and anything else you should be aware of, such as whether a bird guard or chimney cap would be beneficial for your installation.
