Service your stove

Keep Your Wood-burner Safe, Efficient, and Ready for Winter

A wood burning stove is one of the most satisfying additions to any home – warm, characterful, and wonderfully efficient when it’s properly maintained.

Just like any appliance that works hard through the colder months, it needs regular attention to keep performing at its best. At IJ Marshman, we provide professional servicing and repair for wood burning stoves across the Trowbridge area and north-west Wiltshire, helping you get the most from your stove season after season.

Wood burning stoves operate under intense heat and constant thermal cycling, which gradually takes a toll on components, seals, and internal parts. Over time, creosote and tar deposits build up inside the flue and stovepipe, creating a serious fire hazard if left unchecked.

Deteriorating door seals allow air to enter uncontrolled, reducing combustion efficiency and burning through fuel faster than necessary. Cracks in the firebox or baffle plate can affect draw and, in some cases, allow harmful gases to escape into your living space.

Beyond safety, a poorly maintained stove simply doesn’t perform as well. You’ll burn more wood for less heat — a frustrating and costly outcome.

HETAS and most stove manufacturers recommend having your wood burning stove serviced at least once a year. The best time is late summer or early autumn, before the heating season begins, so any issues can be identified and resolved before you need your stove most. If your stove gets particularly heavy use, or you notice any change in performance — reduced draw, excessive smoke, or difficulty sustaining a fire — it’s worth booking a service sooner rather than later.

WOODBURNER MAINTENANCE

What Does a Wood-burner Service Include?

A thorough annual service of your woodburner from IJ Marshman covers all the key components of your stove and flue system:

We’ll talk you through our findings and advise on any repairs needed.

You can do your bit inbetween services to keep your stove in great condition. The most important thing with a woodburner is to only burn seasoned wood to prevent the excessive build up of creosote. Also, keep the glass clean (using a damp rag or newspaper dipped in ash), remove ash build up leaving just a thin layer to protect the base, and make sure any air vents are kept clear.

Woodburner Repairs

What Can Go Wrong with A Woodburning Stove?

Wood burning stoves are built to last, and with the correct care and maintenance have a lifespan of 20 years or more.

Like any appliance, however, repairs may be necessary along the way to keep your stove working safely and pumping out as much heat as possible.

We’ve been repairing woodburning stoves and sweeping chimneys in Trowbridge, Warminster, Bradford on Avon, Corsham and Devizes in Wiltshire, and Frome – just over the county border in Somerset – for 35 years.

The most frequent repairs we see include replacement of worn door rope seals, cracked or warped baffle plates, damaged firebricks, broken grates, and faulty air control mechanisms. Stove glass replacement is also common — thermal stress and accidental impact can cause cracks that affect both appearance and safety.

In most cases, these repairs are straightforward and cost-effective when caught early, so you can enjoy your woodburner for many more years.

A well-maintained stove is safer, more efficient, and far cheaper to run in the long term. Neglecting servicing can lead to larger repair bills, reduced appliance lifespan, and — most importantly — risk to your home and family.
